3 Things to Remember when Writing Magic by Rebekah R. Ganiere

Hello Everyone! I’m Rebekah R. Ganiere and I write in a ton of genres. Almost every single one has a common thread though, magic.

In everything I write somehow there is a thread of magic. Whether is be Werewolves that shift or zombies with telekinesis or steampunk gadgets or aliens with mind powers. All of them employ a portion of magic.

There is so much more that goes into building a magic system than just throwing some fancy Latin words together to create a spell. When adding magic into your story, you have to consider all of these things…and more! Yes, lots more!

  • What is Magic?
  • Who can use it?
  • Magic Dominions.
  • Magical Aids.
  • Rules.
  • Magic vs. Technology.
  • Fighting with Magic.
  • Magic isn’t always the answer.
  • History of Magic in your world.

This list doesn’t cover every aspect, but there are three very important aspects that must be known for the world building to be considered realistic. I’m going to share the three tips that I feel is the most important to me when I’m building worlds for my books.

Tip 1: Magic isn’t a catch all.

When you use magic, it’s a tool, like a sword or a book. It shouldn’t be used to fix everything. Magic isn’t what you use to win the fight, it’s what you use to get you to the point where you can win.

Tip 2: Magic needs Rules.

Yes, you can have magic that does everything, helps everything. Without thinking your characters can throw magic around and make it do whatever they want, but that’s neither realistic nor is it something readers will read for long. It’s too easy. So make rules.

Tip 3: Magic needs a cost.

All magic needs to cost something. It can’t be free or where’s the tension? If you can get what you want, when you want it, what’s the fun in that? After a while you’d get bored, lazy and tired. And so will your magic users if they use their magic all the time without some cost.

Rebekah is her workshop, Build YOUR Authentic World of Magic and Magic Systems at SavvyAuthors starting on September 19th.

Oh I so wanted to take this work shop, but I don't have $35 or even $25 if I were a premium member. It is exactly what I need to work with my NaNo project this year. Sniff. I wonder if there are books one can go to for more information, like at the library?
