Deb Werksman, Editor, Sourcebooks

Currently looking for:

Own Voices mainstream single title romance in all sub-genres: paranormal, historical, romantic suspense, contemporary, erotic romance with:

  • a protagonist the reader can relate to
  • a love interest she can fall in love with
  • a world into which the reader can escape
  • a hook we can sell in 2-3 sentences
  • a career arc that we can build for the author (in other words, this book begins a series or begins a career that we can build)

I’m also seeking Own Voices commercial women’s fiction with a strong hook and an unusual angle.

About Deb: Deb Werksman has been at Sourcebooks for the past twenty years, before which she had her own publishing company. She is the editorial director of romance fiction and acquires single title romance in all subgenres. Sourcebooks publishes 6-8 romance titles per month, in print and ebook formats simultaneously. We are the country’s largest woman-owned independent publishing house. We’re known for our sales and marketing, as well as our focus on building authors’ careers.

Mary Altman, Editor, Sourcebooks

Currently looking for:

Unique, engaging, risk-taking Own Voices romance in all subgenres. I’m drawn to books that are smart, feminist, and a little revolutionary. I have a weakness for a good man vs. wild narrative and tend to prefer Arctic tundras over boardrooms. I am very open to LGBTQIA+ stories.

Overall, I look for relatable characters, a fully fleshed out world, and a high concept hook that can be sold in two to three sentences. I’ve recently opened my door to Young Adult and Mystery—especially unique cozies—and welcome pitches from all three genres.

About Mary: Mary Altman discovered Romance in the 4th grade when her best friend smuggled a copy of A Knight in Shining Armor to the lunchroom, and she’s been a convert ever since. A giant and unrepentant nerd, Mary spends her free time playing video games and watching Critical Role. She started her post-college life studying law before coming to her senses and settling happily into a decade-long editorial career.

Cat Clyne, Editor, Sourcebooks

Currently looking for:

Cat is looking for diverse, unforgettable characters who grab her and make her root for their happy ever after. She’s searching for series with a slam-dunk hook, curl-her-toes romance, and out-of-the-box thinking (surprise me!). Cat has a fondness for damaged heroes and a well-written band of brothers bond. On Cat’s wish list: projects by authors of color are particularly welcome, as well as cross-genre projects, such as sci-fi and fantasy romance, issue-driven contemporary romantic stories, or romantic thrillers. She is looking for authors with projects she can get really excited about, career-oriented writers who are looking for a publishing partner to make something amazing together.

About Cat: Cat Clyne has been helping writers hone their craft for most of her adult life. She worked in academia and magazine publishing before joining Sourcebooks in 2010. Cat acquires single title romance in all subgenres: romantic suspense, contemporary romance, paranormal romance, erotic romance, Highlanders and historicals. Born in Germany to diplomat parents, Cat has a Master’s degree from New York University and lives in Brooklyn
