Syllabus
Week 1 – How to Show, not Tell

It’s one of the first things an author is told he/she should do, but doing it right isn’t always easy. Find out ways to make your storytelling exciting and evocative.
· How to do it
· Tricks to flush out ‘telling scenes’

Week 2 - Creating Complex Characters

It’s through your protagonists that a reader enters the story. Learn how to create characters readers can’t help but want to follow.
· Looking at archetypes for inspiration
· What you have to get across when developing a character.

Week 3 - Understanding Point of View

Using point of view effectively is critical for making readers care about your characters. Find out how to use this element to make your story stay with readers long after they put the book down.
· The types of point of view – when and how to use them
· Knowing which point of view to use
· How to tell when you’ve slipped

Week 4 – Layering

Once you’ve got the bare bones of your story, it’s time for layering. But what kind of elements need to be layered? The possibilities are endless…as long as you do it right.
· Building a book is like building a house. You can’t stop at the foundation.
· The B storyline – how does it interact with the main plot?
· Subplots – do you need them?

Week 5 - Creating Conflict that Works

A weak conflict is the number one reason why manuscripts get rejected. Learn how to make yours bulletproof.
· The various types of conflict. Which ones work best for what you’re writing.
· How much conflict is enough? And what makes a conflict believable.

Week 6 - Self-Editing

Typing ‘The End’, doesn’t mean you’re finished. Discover what an editor looks for in a manuscript, and uncover the tools you’ll need to make your book seem like it’s been professionally edited.
· A checklist for making sure you’ve done the big stuff right.
· How to double-check the small stuff, and computer programs that can help.
