Have you wondered why, after submitting only the first few pages of your manuscript, an agent swiftly rejects your submission? What did they see, and (more importantly) what did you miss in your countless rounds of revisions? In this workshop, learn to identify the key red flags in your opening pages that swiftly earn a rejection from agents, as well as a few alternative methods to edit your manuscript to avoid harboring these literary rascals.

Included in this workshop:
  • Two lessons on the red flags in editing
  • Live Q&A with instructor
  • First five pages critique (if submitted on or before the deadline)
Objectives:

Review some of the most common red flags that agents and editors come across in submissions that can earn writers a swift rejection in their opening manuscript pages. Some of the red flags include, but are not limited to:

  • Starting your story in the wrong place
  • Too much telling vs. showing
  • No clear stakes
  • An unlikeable protagonist (or, rather, one that is too unlikeable)
  • Too much background information in the opening pages
  • No sense of place/not enough description of setting
  • Adverb- and adjective-heavy writing
  • Unoriginal material/writing with too many tropes
