Setting. It’s where your story takes place. Your characters spend all their time there, and we want readers to leave feeling like they just got back from vacation. Even if you’re writing in the “real” world, this can be tough. If you’re building a world from scratch, making it pop off the page has even more challenges.

You may have heard that your speculative world should be a character in its own right. But how do you make that happen? Even if you’re writing fantasy set in the “real” world or about a place where many spec-fic books have taken place (such as outer space), there are ways to make a common location completely your story’s own. It requires digging deeper into your characters, language, descriptions, and magic/technology to find the uniqueness hidden in those places. There’s a lot to unpack, but there are also ways to build your world with a single word change.

Make your SFF or paranormal worlds come alive.

Topics we’ll cover include:
  • word choice for world building
  • engaging character emotions in descriptions
  • describing “background” details (things that go by in the background
  • but provide vital information about how the world operates)
  • adding details to magic/technology
