Homework Day Seven: Character Arc Exercises

What if you had something that could be with her all the time? A notebook, a diary, a piece of jewellery, a watch, something like that? Something that has resonance to her family? Maybe there’s a song? Or a story?

    Homework Day Six: Linking Exercises

Yes, I think Sophie’s motivation is strong enough...but I would add that BEFORE she finds out her heritage, she battles to fit in, so there’s that underlying motivation of trying to find where she ‘fits’ in the world. This is merely complicated by the revelation of who she is. You can use...

    Homework Day Six: Linking Exercises

Love how the final image is in the morgue! Perfect! Particularly for Bobbie...could she be less “normal’! And of course, she’s happy and powerful in her own skin

Question Day Four: Conflict with the love interest exercises

So they both have parents who withheld the truth from them in some way? That’s definitely something that they'll be able to relate to in each other. :)

Homework Day Three: Cataclysmic Events Exercise

Wow, Sophie has a lot to deal with! So much betrayal and at an identity level too  Great inner conflict around what family means, what trust means, and of course about who she is. I like the bit about redemption with Cherry...that’s usually where we go wrong in real life, but into great...

Homework Day Five: Defence Mechanisms Exercises

Thank you! Okay, got it now! I love the way Link has to see Bobbie die, reliving all his worst nightmares come to life - that’s some serious inner hell you’re putting him under which makes great reading :) And poor Bobbie, you don’t let her off lightly either. That’s a lot for her to deal...

    Discussion Day Seven: Character Arc

General rule of thumb with romance is to make sure your heroine gets what she needs and more so!

Homework Day Seven: Character Arc Exercises

Your opening image - you could perhaps combine it with Fernando telling her about her mother? There’d be a greater poignancy when he tells her he’d always find her as we (the reader) would know that he’s all she’s got left in terms of people who actually care for her. And it would show her...

    Homework Day Six: Linking Exercises

The final scene shows her actually fending him off herself which is important as she’s been ‘rescued’ the previous two times. Maybe don’t kill him, just have him rudely awakened?! I’d also have Hiram only rescue her once from him otherwise there’s a danger of repeating beats.

Homework Day Seven: Character Arc Exercises

Activity 1: Dark night of the soul This occurs after the third turning point (the worst failure in terms of fear facing). For your character, this is where they give up hope of ever overcoming their fear. For a moment, they’ll return back to the person they were at the beginning of the novel...

    Discussion Day Seven: Character Arc

We’ve reached the end! This our last day together. So it seems appropriate that we end by coming full circle. If your character works through their internal conflict, facing their fears and overcoming them – they will not come out the same person. Your character by the end of the novel, must...

Homework Day Five: Defence Mechanisms Exercises

 so Everlast are hypocrites? They don’t like magic but want people with magic running the show? (Am I missing a piece here?) Why is Link happy to work with Everlast? What makes them different from other magic people? I think I’m missing some rules of the game. Who killed Paul? Was it...
