"Let’s start with what I did right: pausing at my closed front door and assessing the forest’s restlessness before venturing outside.

I was already half an hour out, hiking through the night-dark shadows of the maple grove, before it occurred to me that I should have stayed home."
And Katya's first three lines:
"Most people who know they’re going to die don’t assemble a crowd of over a hundred people, yet here we are.
I pace the flagstones, trying to keep order of the wash of murmuring, frowning people shuffling towards where we’ve been told to assemble.
“Raise? What’s all this?”"
