This is a great time of year because you can assess how you did last year in your writing career, and you can decide where you want to go the next year. This kind of planning and assessment is very important for your overall productivity and success.

However, I want to discuss another kind of planning and assessing, and that is setting 2, 3 and 5 year writing goals. I just bought a brand new journal for this purpose. I have labelled it "Word Warrior Five Year Plan". You could name yours by another name if you like.

Then, divide your journal into five sections, one for each year starting with 2020 and ending with 2024. I plan to divide the book into 55 page segments, one page for each week of each year, and 3 pages for a yearly assessment of how I did on my initial goals for the year.

The first pages of your journal should contain your long-term goals for the next 2, 3 and 5 years. Dream a little, but please be realistic too. Always plan for things that are in your control as much as possible too.

It may be hard for some of us to decide on what our goals will be for five years. And if you are one of those writers, that's okay. Still this is a good exercise. Because when you start thinking long term about your goals in this way, something positive happens. You will be productive and you will be planning many goals and completing them. You will even become more versatile as a writer.

So, go out and buy yourself a journal that you can use for five years. This won't replace your weekly, monthly and yearly journals. It is just another level of assessment that you can use as a tool towards being more productive.

Take care, and let's make 2020 one of the most productive years that we ever had.

Merry Christmas!
