Title: SELF-CHECKOUT

Length: 84,000 words
Author: Sarah Ski

After a close call, Charlotte wants out of the assassination business and another shot with the guy she left behind. Ben, her ex, is a dutiful son, running the family grocery store and dating the woman his mom wants him to marry—getting involved with Charlotte again means defying his family and abandoning small-town life. Charlotte wants back in his bed, but there’s one little problem—she’s been hired to kill Ben’s mom, who’s never liked her, and going through with the job may be Charlotte’s only chance at happily ever after.

Sarah, thank you for pitching! I'm not sure about the heroine being an assassin--that's a bit tough for me to believe, and it threw me right out of the story. Assassins are a romantic suspense trope, but this isn't romantic suspense. Tough for readers to emotionally relate to assassin heroine, I fear.

Title: Blood Promotion
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: 82k
Author: M.J. Rose

Self-confidence, a steady paycheck, and a swivel chair—that's all reporter Tessa Sanders wants. So when the megalomaniac mayor inadvertently gives her the ultimate career-making story, it's reason to celebrate...until the lead lands her in a nightmare world of monsters and dead bodies. Seems humankind is on a deadline, and if she and her new co-worker, a drop-dead-gorgeous vampire who can't decide if he wants to kiss her or kill her, can't break the story before their time's up, humanity gets its pink slip.

D
Deb Werksman
Are you THE MJ Rose? In which case, please send this to me [email protected] . If you're a different MJ Rose, can you revise the pitch to bring forward the world-building (rather than plot points) and then I'd love to take a look. I think vampires are going to come back...

Thank you Michelle! I'm not sure about the positioning here--you might want to think about whether to position into romance (medical?) or into mystery. The way this is pitched it might be neither fish nor fowl, which makes it hard to sell. Give it a really great hook!

Length: 90,300 words

She believes a new job in another state will transform her life, and she may be right. Deb Werksman
Hi Linda, thanks for pitching! Librarians and light magical realism can be a real winner. Not sure about calling a 26 year old an "old maid" but I'd like to read more. Please send full proposal (manuscript, synopsis, pitch) to [email protected]

Hi Tonya, thank you for pitching! I'm not sure how to sell a combination of New Adult with cowboy--I think they might be two distinct and different audiences.

Thank you for pitching Rachel! You have the time-tested tropes, I'm not sure what the hook is that will make this a "must-read" in a really overcrowded marketplace.

Title- Magic in the Air
Genre - Paranormal Romantic Comedy
Word Count - 71,000
Author - Adrianna Schuh

Small town baker and single mom Olivia Ayala knows a thing or two about witches, considering she is one.

That's how she knows charming newcomer Draven James is hiding something.

And protecting the town means finding out what, she just has to avoid losing her heart in the process.

D
Deb Werksman
Thank you for pitching Adrianna! There's a lot of paranormal romcom coming on the market now, including a lot of witches. It will be really interesting to see how they sell. By the time your book would come to market, it would really have to distinguish itself from the competition with a "must read" hook.

Hi Viya, thanks for pitching. Great idea to include comps--these comps are not in the same category, however, so not really sure how you'd position against them. You've got a number of time-tested category romance tropes--not sure how the "deadringer" trope would appeal. It's similar to amnesia in terms of making it credible vs. deus ex machina.

Hi Noel, thanks for pitching. With a married hero and heroine, this won't work in the romance space. Better to pitch to a mystery/suspense editor.

  • Title: Making Waves
  • Genre: Contemporary Romance (rom-com)
  • Length: 73,000 words
  • Author: DK Marie
LILITH BROOK'S life is a mess. She has a serial-cheating husband who won't sign their divorce papers and is issuing threats if she doesn't return to him by the end of the summer.

What she needs is to free herself of her estranged husband, figure out how to support herself and her daughter, and find the confident woman she was before getting married.

What she wants is her new neighbor and sexy single dad, ASHER CROWLEY. However, her ravaged heart (and a past that refuses to stay there) tells her to keep him in the friend zone, but one kiss could obliterate all her plans.

D
Deb Werksman
Hi DK, this has women's fiction themes, not romance themes. It needs a slam-dunk hook for selling with, and you might want to figure out where it really sits on shelf. Married heroine doesn't work all that well in the romance category. And I don't get the funny which is essential in romcom.

Will she be able to save Buffalo Ridge from one of her wealthy investors, and snag the heart of the town’s aloof, but winsome, cowboy manager in the process?

D
Deb Werksman
Hi Addey, you have the city girl meets cowboy but I'm not sure what to do with the cowboy trope if he's running a tourist attraction rather than a ranch...I'm not sure what the hook is.
