Title: Maplewood Resort
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Length: 73,000
Author: Keri Bednar

Fiona has a huge art show to put together and doesn’t have time for a vacation, but she can’t resist a weekend away with her sister; excitement is high, that is until she runs into Travis. He might look like a sexy lumberjack, but Fiona can’t stand Travis- the grumpy owner of the resort (and surprisingly, the artist behind the stunning woodwork decorating it). When a snowstorm hits and roads close, a shared love of art might not be the only thing keeping them warm.

Hi Keri, thank you for pitching. There's some fun stuff in this pitch, and I'm not sure what the hook is that will sell this in such an overcrowded marketplace.

Hi Carole Ann, thanks for pitching. Cowboy romances are still selling pretty well in Walmart--you have the time-tested tropes of city girl returning home to ranch, but I'm not quite seeing the hook that will sell this in an overcrowded space.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Title: Journey Back to Love
Word count: 80,000

Start with a young widow and broken promises. Add in an overworked, bitter divorcée. Stir in some vandalism, arson, attempted murder, and an abduction and heat it up until it sizzles and you get a romance with a twist.

Deb Werksman
HI Rebecca, thank you for this pitch. I don't see the hook to sell the book with--you have quite a few romantic suspense elements, and romantic suspense is very challenging to sell at the moment.

Thank you Kim! Hockey/sports romance needs another hook to make it sell in the commercial space--seems to do well in the self-pub space though.

Hi Anastasia, witchy romance/romcoms are launching in the marketplace right now. We'd need to see how they do, and a strong hook for your story to make it sell in what's likely to be a crowded space by the time this would come out.

Second Stanza opens with the devastating loss suffered by college junior, Jackie, when her musically gifted, Swedish-American boyfriend dies in a gas explosion. When she falls hard and fast for a stranger more than a decade later, odd feelings of familiarity confuse her. Why does this dark-haired Jake remind her so much of Leo, and are the walls he puts between them meant to drive her away or keep her alive?

D
Deb Werksman
Hi Meg, romantic suspense is really hard to sell at this moment, alas. You might want to consider not opening the story with backstory/set up. Jump right in, especially since you'll need fast pacing in this subgenre.

Hi Carde, thank you for pitching! Fantasy romance is very popular right now, especially based on the Greek myths. Sci-fi romance is much harder to sell, alas.

Thank you for pitching Samantha. Regency/early Victorian romance needs to feature nobility and be set squarely in the sweet spot of society (think Bridgerton) to work these days.
