Most writers have quite a few writing goals. It can be hard to know which ones to complete first and second.

If we don’t prioritize our goals, we will find ourselves drifting between goals without any rhyme or reason.

Therefore, it’s important to your success as a writer to ensure that you know which of your goals are the most important and which the least important.

The trick to reaching those goals is to prioritize them and work towards just a few of them at a time.

Here are some questions to help you prioritize your writing goals.

1. Which writing goals nag at you the most? Usually, the ones that nag the most are the most important ones to tackle first. Sometimes they can be hard to complete at first though, because there’s an emotional component to them. That’s to be expected. Just keep on going and listen to your gut.

2. Which writing goals can be accomplished most easily? Sometimes, starting with the easiest goals is the best thing you can do for yourself. You will check off the goal and be onto the next thing.

3. Which writing goals would produce the greatest value to your writing career if you reached them? This is usually a subjective feeling that you get from a goal. However, it can inspire and motivate you to complete the goal.

4. Which writing goals excite you the most? The goals that excite you the most are usually the ones that you can complete the quickest. Make sure that you pay attention to what your gut is trying to tell you.

5. Which writing goals scare you the most? Typically, the writing goals that scare you the most are the ones that you won’t want to complete first. And that’s okay. You can put them on a back burner. Just make sure that you schedule them at some point in the year. Otherwise, you may forget all about them.

By answering each of these questions, you'll probably find that your writing goals prioritize themselves.

Try it!
