Writers tend to struggle with staying motivated on their projects. Typically, our motivations ebb and flow. The best thing we can do to be successful is to ensure that we get motivated to complete a project and continue until we complete it.

However, things are rarely this simple, are they? We tend to get motivated, work on the project full throttle, and then become disinterested and need to change course.

This is when we switch to another manuscript or project. We may decide that maybe we should clean the house or wash the dishes in the China cabinet. Whatever we do, we want to do something else, anything else.

This is the wrong approach to completing our goals. Just because things get hard, we shouldn’t quit and move on to something else.

So here are a few ways to ensure you continue working on completing your project, even when your motivation ebbs.

1. Select to work on a project that really means to you. Many times, you may select projects you are only half interested in. This creates real issues for us with completing our goals.

2. Believe you can complete the project. Many times, you may be trying to talk yourself out of completing a project because suddenly you may not believe you can do it. The bad news is many times what you believe becomes a self-fulling prophecy. So, if you don’t think you will complete something, you probably won’t. Make sure you think you can complete it.

3. Get support and help when and if you need it. Many times, you need someone to remind you that you can do anything you set your mind to. So, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. And sometimes having support can make all the difference.

By taking these steps, you will staying motivated to complete your project. This is one way to not only complete your writing projects and be successful, but also to believe in yourself. The more often you complete your projects, the more confident you will be that you will complete future projects. So, it’s a win-win.

Try it the next time you want to switch projects in mid-stream.
