Hi all,

This month, we will be exploring how to write for the Travel industry.

So, if you traveled for vacation this year, I hope you took lots and lots of notes about the places you visited. They will make for GREAT material for writing travel articles.

It is great to write travel magazines. I have been writing travel articles for about five years. They are wonderful ways of taking some time off from your normal WIP.

So, without further ado, please find attached your lesson. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Travel writing is something I've been very interested in but haven't had much luck selling any articles for, so I'm excited to learn more. In answer to the questions:

1. What areas of the world would you like to write about? Brainstorm as many areas as possible and then post these places in the forum.
--I've already got a draft article on Riga, Latvia and have pitches for Stockholm, Sweden and Lima, Peru - since those were all places we traveled in the last year. I could also do an article on Montreal and/or Quebec, and 24 hours in Burlington, VT with a young child.
--Thanks to this summer's travel, I could easily do articles on Cambridge, England and Cornwall, England, and possibly a piece about 48 hours in Paris with a young child.
-- Looking ahead, I think we'll have the opportunity to travel to Hawaii this spring, so I could also potentially write on that, though I feel Hawaii, like Paris, has already been extensively covered, so there would have to be a good hook.

2. Can you write about the area you live in? Is there anything that would be interesting in your area to an outsider?
Yes! The Hudson Valley in NY is an area of natural beauty and some surprising history. I would love to write out outdoor activities to do here with kids, but could also easily put together a "perfect itinerary" piece for day trippers up from NYC. There are lots of unique historical areas around here too that could make for additional articles, and a strong farm to table movement/industry that opens up other writing angles.

3. What kind of travel writing do you plan to do? Adventure? Informational? Advice articles?
Since we've done comparatively quite a bit of world travel with a small human, I'd like to write about family travel and ways to make international travel fun and affordable for the whole family. I feel like that's a niche I can speak to with some authority. But I also like to put together "best of" itineraries for short periods - 24 to 72 hours, like the Travel and Leisure articles "3 days in...." series. I also like to be active, hiking, kayaking, and doing other "off the beaten path" kinds of things, so would love to write to highlight those opportunities that go beyond the major tourist destinations.

Hi Thea,

It can take a while to break into the travel market. But once you do, you will be able to make a great side income.

Wow, Thea! You have a lot of material to write about. That's wonderful. Next week, you will learn about the Bubble Method for outlining your ideas. I would start brainstorming ideas about each of these wonderful places that you visited.

You live in a wonderful area! Yes, by all means, please write about it.

Family travel adventures are very popular and interesting. They are also topics that parents can really relate to.

GREAT job on this assignment!

When we meet for our coaching session, I can definitely help you brainstorm ideas for these articles.

Take care, and welcome home again!
