Hi all,

This week starts the middle of July. The summer is running past us...

How are you doing with your goals?

What are your goals for this coming week, and for the rest of the month?

Please post your goals under this thread.

Take care,

I didn’t do the triathlon today, but I napped on another day. So hurray for (at least) 500 words x 5 days this week, and I’m planning to write tomorrow too. I better get to my outlining & my revising goals, haha.

Goals for next week:
  • 6 days x 500+ words on WIP
  • At least one dictation session a day — use my lapel mic it makes for clearer recordings and less fixing the transcription.
  • start drafting short story?

My goals for this week are:
  • Finish and tie up any loose ends on character and character sketches
  • Examine U7 outline. I need to identify the holes and how am I going to fill them and make the story more cohesive.
  • My husband and I went to Brimfield, MA today where they have the antique and flea market. I took pictures....bought a few things and collected info. I want to write an article on summer day trips and easy, inexpensive ways to have fun.
  • I started a short story about a blind date.

Hi Lille,

These are wonderful goals!

That is great that you went to a flea market with your husband. How wonderful! Articles about summer trips are the best.

I love your idea for a short story too!!! Wow!!! GREAT job!!!

Hi all,

great work ladies. Best of luck for this coming week!

This past week was good in a lot of ways but my planned goal (of 10 hours I think?) did not happen. I managed 6 hours of edits on the novel, and managed an hour or two on reviewing the plot outline of another novel. But I had a couple of days where I worried I was losing it - my connection to the story, my habit of writing for an hour or two first thing, and my smooth-first-week-of-holidays momentum. The first week of holidays went so well, and the second didn't echo that. I had to pull myself back a number of times and remind myself that this habit-building is a work in progress. So I practised being kind to myself, and well, my husband also talked me down from the ledge.

I have taken the time to plan this coming week, and my goals are:
  • 12 hours on the novel (this should take care of Scene 3, and I will make a start on Scene 4);
  • write first thing in the morning, and for 2 hours;
  • draft the bones of a short story (aiming for 400 words this week);
  • try and find some Woman's way (US) short stories online and read these to learn the style and tone they expect. Read the Irish WW short stories.

That's it from me.

Hi Nikki!

Yes, it can take at least 21 to 42 days to form any habit. Even then it is iffy for us to really continue. If something comes up, it will be really hard to continue to write. So, yes, please be patient with yourself.

But most importantly, what I have been seeing is steady improvement from you!!!! GREAT GREAT work!!!! And you are showing up to write every day and logging into the forum. All of these are positives. And eight hours is GREAT! As you continue to write, the act of getting to write will help you to form a habit of writing. So much so that if you don't write, you will really miss it.

Take care, and keep up the GREAT work!

I appreciated Nikki's comment that habit-building is a work in progress. I've actually had a couple of small achievements this week that I'm quietly celebrating. I took my son to Paris this weekend, and left the computer behind so that i could focus on being there with him. I brought my notebook, however, and Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones." I got some good reading done during the travel to/from Paris, and found time after putting my son to bed to sit out on our miniature balcony and write in the notebook. It felt so good. I didn't write about anything in particular, just following Natalie's advice to keep my hand going for 30 minutes. I also carried the notebook around with me and managed to remember to jot down short story ideas AND I lined up my goals for this week in my notebook, so now I get the benefit of just transcribing them here. (And, tbh, making on this site early this week WAS one of the goals).

My other goals:

  1. Write a short story
  2. Write at least 4 days this week
  3. Submit my MG MS to at least one agent here in the UK (even though it's July and I know they're mostly on holiday already)
  4. check status of US subs that are aging out and see if reminder emails are welcomed

Hi Thea!

Wow!!! It sounds like you are in a really perfect place to write. The miniature balcony sounds like a heavenly place to write.

Natalie Goldberg is a classic read on how to write every day. She is just absolutely amazing, and I wish others would read the book too. And it is GREAT that you are carrying a notebook and making notes. You will have a lot of material when you return.

Keep up the great work!
