Laura Costello, Assistant Editor, Sourcebooks Casablanca

All Subgenres of Romance

Currently looking for: I’m seeking romance in all subgenres: romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, historical, and erotic. I’m drawn to tense, isolated survival situations in romantic suspense, though action-packed suspense with fun banter is welcome. In paranormal, I’m fascinated by lush fantasy worlds rooted in mythology. But on the other hand, I’d love a romance set in a post-apocalyptic landscape. I’m also on the lookout for creatures—shifters or otherwise—the romance space hasn’t seen in abundance, or a fresh twist on the familiar. In contemporary romance, I lean toward books that are smart, fun, and lighthearted, and I’m a sucker for the friends-to-lovers trope. I’m always looking for diverse and own voices romance, including romances with LGBTQIA+ leads.

About Laura: Laura Costello began her publishing career at Sourcebooks in 2015 after interning at Globe Pequot Press’s FalconGuides imprint and Warscapes, an independent online magazine. She is currently an Assistant Editor for Sourcebooks Casablanca, looking for romance in all subgenres. Sourcebooks publishes 6-8 romance titles per month, in print and ebook formats simultaneously. We are the country’s largest woman-owned independent publishing house. We’re known for our sales and marketing, as well as our focus on building authors’ careers.

Kate Marope, Freelance Acquiring Editor, Carina Press

All Sub-genres Romance (except Historical and Time Travel)

Currently looking for: Looking for stories about pragmatic and competent characters who know what they want and how to get it. Especially interested in LGBTQIA and multicultural protagonists from diverse backgrounds in both mystery and romance.

  • Urban fantasy with f/m, m/m, or trans protagonists, intense clan politics and exquisite world building. Really looking for unusual creature protagonists and unusual settings or cultures.
  • Sweet, feel-good LGBTQIA romance. Think Mary Calmes or Cardeno C.
  • Gut wrenching, ugly cry-worthy stories. Please make sure there is a HEA for the characters!
  • Woman in peril romantic suspense starring a protective bad boy hero (e.g. bodyguards, mafia/mob, underground fighters, even the occasional serial killer).
  • Growly but low-key romantic heroes.
  • Military (or law enforcement) romance. I love Hawaii Five-0, so give me active or retired military personnel who still have their edge.
  • Mysteries (who- or whydunit police procedurals, thrillers, and psychological suspense) featuring former-criminal investigators who use their past life in crime to solve the mystery. Suppressed or rather-be-forgotten pasts are a definite plus.
About Kate:  A full-time freelance editor since 2015, Kate helps authors find their voice and tell their stories in the most compelling way possible. Her client list includes Amazon Humorous Fantasy bestseller PM Drummond, Golden Palm Contest winner Brooke Stanton, and other debut authors in the US and UK. An awesome book doctor in pyjamas, she joined the Carina Press team in 2018. Kate’s drawn to books with pragmatic characters, smart heroines, and intricate world-building. She craves well-developed and authentic characters that feel real. She doesn’t have to like your characters; just understand them. You can check out her website at www.theribbonmarker.com and follow her on Twitter @TheRibbonMarker.
