About Angela and Changeling: I’m Angela Knight, a New York Times bestselling author with fifty published novels, e-books and short stories under my belt over the past 23 years. My publishers include Penguin Random House and Changeling Press, as well as Red Sage, and past publishers Loose Id and Ellora’s Cave. I’ve won a Career Achievement Award and three Critics Choice awards from Romantic Times. I’m also a teacher at Savvy Authors.

Recently I’ve added Changeling editor to my list of accomplishments. Changeling concentrates on short fiction, which is how I got started out as a romance novelist. Our lengths range from 12,000 to 30,000 words, which is a great word count if you’re either just starting out or if you need to build a readership quickly with a lot of published work. I will work closely with you to develop your idea in this pitch session.

Submission Guidelines:

We publish Sci-Fi/Futuristic, Dark and Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, Action Adventure, BDSM, and Guilty Pleasures (Contemporary) Women’s Erotic Romance. All submissions must be targeted for at least one of these genres and must be Women’s Erotic Romance.

While there should be both highly erotic and romantic elements to the book, relationships and endings should be plot driven. We don’t demand your characters trot off to get married at the end of the book, though we do ask for a HEA(Happy Ever After) or, in the case of serials, a HFN(Happy For Now).

We’ve only got one heat level — over-the-top hot! We can handle anything you send us as long as it meets our guidelines (Content must be legal for an over 21 audience and geared toward a primarily female readership). We do not accept simultaneous submissions (An author should not send the same book to several publishers at the same time). We do accept multiple submissions (An author may send us several books at the same time).

Length:We accept submissions from 12 to 30 thousand words for single titles. Serials from unsigned authors must be submitted as a completed set.

ExclusionsWhat we do not do is promote illegal /barely legal activities, include incest, under age sex, rape, or anything that un-empowers women (Or men). NO still means no here.

Please Note:We’re fanatics about quality. From editors, proofreaders, and line editors to artists and marketing staff, our team of dedicated professionals is here for your support.

What have you got to lose — except your inhibitions?

Angela Knight,
I am thrilled at the opportunity to pitch a steamy futuristic romance novel with a unique concept. Please be advised that this book is complex and much larger than the requested word count but perhaps it's something your other publishers would be interested in.

Title: KROVS: Into Darkness
Genre: Dark/Sci-Fi Romance
Word Count: 112,000
Author: M. Lee Woeber

Twenty-six-year-old Tristan is unaware he’s been trained to please the women of a superhuman race. When he falls in love with a human named Serene, she is ill-prepared for what he’s been trained for. Luckily Tristan is a fast learner.

When a jealous ex finds out he’s mated with a human, she turns him into a KROV, like herself. KROVS are bioengineered super soldiers who must consume humans to survive and regenerate. Tristan will be uniquely powerful, but the cost of being a KROV means that he will hunger over what he lusts causing him to attack Serene.

Tristan must stay away from Serene until he learns to control his lust for her or risk killing the very woman he loves. He will also have to train to control his appetite to avoid hurting innocent lives. Eventually, he must learn to wield his unique telekinesis-like powers if there is any chance of stopping the KROVS that plan to subjugate humanity. Into Darkness is a stand-alone book with series potential.

Thanks for reading my pitch.
Sounds like an interesting concept! How does this ex turn him into a KROV?
That's pretty long for us. Is there any way to break it into chunks without destroying the story structure? Also, I don't edit for any other publishers, so unless the book can be released in sections, it won't work for us.

She tries to kill him out of pure jealousy and then as he is dying regrets her decision since she loves him. She needs to get her Alpha-type blood to his heart before it stops beating. Once his heart stops beating the direct virus takes over transforming his body into an Alpha Krov. Meaning a rare and perfect Krov.
Most Krovs are just strong and fast, he will have telekinesis-like powers. Also, the name KROVS is Russian = Krov' Voin meaning Blood Warrior.

It can be broken into a series. The original story was built for a trilogy. There are 2 good stopping points.

Title: Cartel Continuum
Subtitle: The Search for Benton Miles
Genre: Suspense/Mystery/Romance
Length: 65,000 words
Author: Donald Diaz

Private investigator Hector Rojas is charged with finding Benton Miles, a photo journalist, and son of a billionaire, who has gone missing while covering the drug wars in Mexico. Rojas is thrust into the brutally violent and superstitious cartel culture while finding unexpected romance with Benton's sister Meredith, a failed Hollywood actress. Together they uncover a warren of official corruption with possibly ties to the occult and the U.S. intelligence community.
What are the internal conflicts of the two characters, and what are their romantic conflicts? That is, what is keeping them from considering each other a permanent romantic partner rather than a one-night stand?

Title: The In-Between
Genre: Young Adult Supernatural Thriller
Length: 62,000 words
Author: Laurel Hill

When his soulmate, Cali, is kidnapped by the descendants of an evil alien race, Ashton learns he has the supernatural powers needed to find her. If he doesn't have faith in his ability, she'll be taken to a realm between life and death where she'll be stuck for eternity.

The President of the United States is counting on him to keep Cali's identity as the First Daughter a secret. Ashton knows all too well what it's like to be kept hidden from the world and promises not to tell, but her funny squad of friends makes it difficult to keep quiet, and the aliens are influencing those closest to him to kill his family.

The young couple has spent lifetimes fighting to stay free from alien possession. They once built a pyramid to protect their peaceful legacy until a huge flood broke it. If Ashton can't find the deathly neighborhood Cali is being kept in, he'll lose her forever and the aliens will take over the world. The In-Between is a story about self-discovery and empowerment. It is based on the ancient alien theory and is the YA version of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and Aleph.
We don't publish young adult. We're an erotic romance publisher. I'm sorry.

Thomas, I'm sorry, but that doesn't sound like a romance, and it's far too long for Changeling.

Hi Angela Knight, How old should the character be for the category? I don't mind changing her age at all as many of the other main characters are older :) I just picked an age at random for Joie. Would it be accepted otherwise? Thanks!?
Ada - She would need to be 21 at minimum. Both characters would need to be adults by modern standards.

Yes, I can divide this into 45K chunks as it's already divided into a part 1 and part 2. This is also the first book of a trilogy, so I can copy the same model for all books if needed.

I’ll be Gone in the Dark x The Crossfire Series

Freelance reporter Stella Thompson has a standard of newsworthiness. Government scandals, social injustice; and most recently, trying to uncover what really happened to those three girls who were murdered in the summer of 2006. But Cole Maxwell’s sex life? It could not register lower on Stella’s radar. Until a chance meeting brings her face to face with the man she argues is not worth the page space.

Most men would be offended, but Boston’s most enigmatic bachelor is intrigued by Stella’s disinterest in him. With her own set of reservations about getting involved with a man who’s personal life has been headline news since boyhood, she accepts his invitation to explore his clandestine world. But getting involved with Cole has risks. If anyone were to find out, Stella would lose not only her reputation as a serious investigative journalist, but also the chance to uncover the truth behind a series of murders she has been investigating. When a rogue photo of Stella and Cole goes viral, she has to choose - Write the story of her career, or become the story of the year.
Pitches are now closed. Thanks for participating in Hot Summer Pitchfest!
I'm interested in the pitches of Daisyblaine and Elle Jackson . Elle's submission fits well within our parameters, and her idea sounds intriguing. The quality of Daisy's writing is very high even in this short pitch, and her idea is interesting and sexy. Even though the work is too long, I think we may can cut it in chunks, or she might want to write something shorter for me.Both of them are invited to email me through the site mail here. I'll be writing them as well.

To the other entrants -- Your ideas are creative and interesting, and I wish you much success! You might want to consider joining Facebook groups for YA (or whatever) writers who can share information with you on which publishers to approach and how to pitch to them. Yes, I know Facebook is problematic, but that's where writers and editors are. Twitter and Instagram are also good places to find out more about the industry.

My heart goes out to you, because 20 years ago, I got slapped upside the head while pitching to an editor from Harlequin. She told me contemptuously that no way would ANY Harlequin reader want to read about a hero who would go undercover as a male stripper. I was crushed as I left the pitch session. In the hall outside, I found a flyer for Red Sage, a small press which was publishing short erotic romance just before erotic romance took off. I wrote a novella and submitted it to them, and was accepted and published. (This was in 1995.) Ten years later, I was hitting the NY Times list for Penguin Putnam -- and Harlequin was acquiring erotic romance. Today I've written 20 novels and more than 30 novellas, ebooks and shorts.

Don't give up. Learn about your chosen genre. But realize this is not a get rich quick scheme. It requires a lot of work and banging your head against the wall. You can do it, if you're stubborn as hell and willing to do the work. The fact that you were willing to take a chance on your ideas speaks well of your creativity and drive.

I'm rooting for you.
