I always love August. It gives me a chance to take stock of how I did with my writing goals during the summer. Most summers, I have a few goals that I didn’t complete yet. So, part of the reason for my reassessment is to make plans to complete them before the end of the summer.
The summer months can be a hard time to stay on track with your goals. There are vacations, kids are home, and spouses are off work so that they get the much-needed rest they so crave. And writers need some time away too. But you can’t just forget about your goals altogether and do nothing by go on vacation either. Because once September arrives, you will be very upset with yourself for not writing and completing a few of your goals.
I always set a goal for myself in August to complete at least one of my smaller goals in the third quarter. It may be to write a short story, article, or a few blog posts. Whatever it is, I make sure I can check something off by the end of the summer.
So, what can you complete in the next few weeks to start September on the right foot with confidence and happiness?
If you're having trouble reaching your goals, you're probably constantly getting off track.
Here's the best way to stay on track.
Write down one or two writing goals for yourself on an index card.
Keep the index card on your desk or wherever you work each day.
First thing in the morning, review your list of goals on the index card.
As you create your to-do list for the day, make sure each action you plan to take is in alignment with one or more of those 3 major goals.
If you don't keep your goals right in front of you, it's so easy to get off track and do all sorts of things during the day that keep you busy but won't move you forward toward those goals.
So, before you do anything else today, get an index card and write down what you would like to accomplish in the next few weeks. Then try to follow through.
Try it!
