Create a New World

Here's a short, fun writing exercise to help you become a better, more creative writer.

It's adapted from Word Magic for Writers, by Cindy Rogers:

We are living in uncertain times, and much of what we are going through feels like some futuristic experience that, until now, we have only read about or seen in movies.

But you can use some of what's going on these days to create a new world in just one sentence.

And, who knows?

This sentence could be the start of an entire story.

Simply rewrite George Orwell's memorable opener of 1984 in some way: "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

Face masks, social distancing, virus testing, etc.

There are all sorts of things you can use to create your new world.

Our world is evolving in new, never seen ways. Whether you are writing fiction for adults, teens, tweens or adults, you can create a world that is familiar to each of these audiences.

I am in the midst of writing a picture book about the pandemic called What’s Happening Mommy!

I am also in the midst of writing a Young Adult novel called Times of Trial.

What are you planning to write? Maybe you should sit down this weekend and do some brainstorming.

Just start by coming up with one sentence.

Try it!
