We are moving into the holiday season, that widely anticipated season when we meet with friends and family over the next 6 weeks or so. This can be a wonderful time of year. I just love Christmas. But I always find ways to write during the holidays. I enjoy moments with family and friends, but I also enjoy times of solitude with pen and paper or laptop in front of the fireplace with the Christmas tree lights flashing in different colors in the background.
However, writing during the Christmas holiday season can be hard. There is always something coming up to distract us from our main intentions. This usually results in frustration and even guilt for writers. In addition, if we don’t write, we won’t be productive. The Christmas holiday season will end, and we will be wondering why we didn’t write—even a bit.
At this point, guilt will set in, and it will be harder to get back into our writing rhythms in the winter. Therefore, it is important to create a writing schedule for the Christmas holiday season. You don’t have to plan weeks in advance. But plan one week at a time. We really can both write and enjoy ourselves with the family and friends.
One way to write consistently during the Christmas holiday season is to set one writing goal to complete. It could be something like writing a few picture books or a few short stories. Or it could be more complex, such as revising your WIP so that in the winter you could make the final changes and submit your manuscript to a publisher or agent. You just need to set aside time this week to get organized so that you can write during the holiday season.
For many of us, our kids will be out of school. They will want to be entertained and days will fill up with fun activities. The weather will also be hard to navigate for writers in the northern hemisphere. Everyone will be in a rest and play mentality, which is not conducive to writing.
Therefore, you must reorganize your schedule so that you can write AND have fun with your family and friends. Is it possible to create balance so that we can do both? Yes, you sure can. I will show you how to do this over the next few weeks.
The same obstacles may exist for writers who are vacationing abroad for a week or two. To be most successful, you should plan to write every day. This will mean you will have to look for creative ways to write, regardless of where you are. You may want to wake up earlier and write. Or you may want to take a nap after your daily activities and write for an hour afterwards. Consistency is key for writers to be most effective and successful. You may want to talk to your family before the holidays set in to let them know that you will need a bit of time every day to write.
You must remember that you are a writer, regardless of where you are or what time of year it is. You are not a part-time writer. Therefore, you should let your family know that you are serious about your writing by setting specific times to write regularly. As you write on a consistent basis, you will be letting your family know that you are committed to your writing. If you take your writing seriously, so will your family.
Over the course of the next few weeks, I will outline six tips and tricks to write during the Christmas holidays. I offer a macro-micro analysis of how to achieve this from assessing and deciding which goals you should complete to advance your long-term writing goals to what you should do daily to make sure you complete these long-term goals.
Writing duing the Christmas season can be tricky. But it isn’t impossible with a bit of planning, I will show you some time-honored tricks to do so in this month. That way, you can get some writing done this holiday season and be proud of your accomplishments by the new year. Imagine finishing up 2022 on a strong note.
