Hi all,

Here is your lesson for this week.

As always, please print it off and then read it over and do the assignment. I will be reading the assignment and post my responses by Wednesday.

Last week was an exception because I couldn't post in the forum due to technical issues.

Take care all, and have a productive week!

Irene Roth

  1. Do you write to clear your mind?
    1. Sometimes I do journal to clear my mind. It depends. I've tossed the morning pages style writing for a LONG gratitude list (goal is to hit 444 words to maintain my 4thewords streak before writing) and then if I need to clear my mind about my writing, I do go back and do that.
  2. Do you write to ease stress?
    1. Definitely. The gratitude list is a huge part of that. Also, journaling around things helps, and so does getting raw words on the page of fiction.
  3. Canyouwriteaboutsomepainfulcircumstances
    that occurred to you?
    1. not sure what happened with my copy paste here, but yes. One of the first scenes in my series that I'm working on is literally reworked from an exchange I had as a high school senior. Writing that was really cathartic. I think that I should work on incorporating more scenes like that. Also, my MC's problematic relationship with her grandmother is kind of based on some of the issues I have with my own grandmother (who raised me) albeit, changed a bit to be fictionalized and hopefully more powerful.
  4. Canyouwritewithouthindrances?
    1. Sometimes. I don't know, as I mentioned in my post last week, I'm getting all caught up in my head lately and I'm not sure what the problem is. I think I'm worrying too much about craft, or else, I'm not sure. This is a hit or miss thing. And the idea of publishing under a pen name definitely helps with this, lol, that way family can't be offended if they recognize themselves in a character I've written, haha. JOurnaling I definitely can... oops and that's the little one waking up. Journaling I can. Fiction it depends. Sometimes I get caught up in the this isn’t good enough or what will so and do think, but pen name is helping with the latter problem there.

Hi Mel,

Here are my comments on your assignment responses.

That's wonderful Mel! Journaling is a great way to get writing!
  2. Do you write to ease stress?
    1. Definitely. The gratitude list is a huge part of that. Also, journaling around things helps, and so does getting raw words on the page of fiction. That's GREAT! A gratitude list can help you appreciate what is before you.
  3. Can you write about some painful circumstances that occurred to you?
    1. not sure what happened with my copy paste here, but yes. That great. Sometimes writing about what really hurt can be cathartic.

Getting all caught up in your head happens to all writers. As long as you are aware of it though journaling, you can really get to the bottom of your hindrances and obstacles.

Sorry I'm a bit late on this. Just back from spring break, which at this point in our lives means visiting aging relatives in FL. Catching up now.

1. Do you write to clear your mind?
Sometimes. I have a journal, which I'm endeavoring to write in more frequently this year, but it's still pretty sporadic. I have noticed that it can help to unload some of the stronger emotions into though.

2. Do you write to ease stress?
This is a hard one to answer, because for me writing is a joy but not necessarily something I turn to for stress release. In fact, there are times (when I get overly goal focused) that it creates its own special kind of stress. But like with any job you love, even the stress is something I don't mind.

3. Can you write about some painful circumstances that occurred to you?
I've lived a pretty blessed life, so don't have too many of these to write about in the first place. Still, those that I have are not the things that I wish to write about. In fact, one of the reasons I enjoy writing fiction is that it is an anti-dote to some of the pain I've seen or experienced. I believe that the sharing of stories is a way to bring the global community together, to emphasize our common humanity - and that's something I'd rather do than dwell on the darkness I've seen.

4. Can you write without hindrances?
For me, the biggest hindrance is just time. When I get the time to sit down to write, it generally streams out. That flow feels so good. That creation and release! That's why I've been able to commit to getting up earlier to do it every day. To let the words flow, to move the goals forward, even just an hour at a time each day, has felt so good.
