Lesson for the Weeks of December 19th through
December 31st, 2016

For Year Long Mentoring Group

Irene S. Roth
Hi ladies,

As I prepare this lesson, I am astutely aware that it is the end of the year in just a few days! Where did this year go?!

Over the past few weeks, I have been encouraging you to look at your short-term and long-term writing goals for 2017, and to reflect on your accomplishments this past year. You can post your goals at any time over the next week or two. I will definitely read them and assess them for you.

If you don’t have much to show for last year, the fact that you wrote this year should be enough reason for you to stand up and take a bow. Or, take yourself out for an end-of-year celebration.

I recently did that with my local writing group. I had a blast. We got to celebrate that we are writers and nothing else. I asked the members to come to our meeting with a list of 5 writing goals that they would like to accomplish in the upcoming year.

There were a few rules:

  • Two of the five goals had to focus on writing a new manuscript.
  • Two of the five goals had to focus on revising an existing manuscript.
  • And one of the five goals had to focus on writing for personal fulfillment.

We each derived our lists and we all made huge strides in discussing our goals in the group.

It was a lot of fun!!!

Okay, so, here is why I am telling you all of this.

I would like to meet you in 10 days to discuss your 5 writing goals for 2017.

Will you be ready with your goals by then? If you aren’t, that’s okay. But you must come to our live chat on Thursday, December 29th at 7 pm EST. I will help you derive your goals first-hand.

Unless you tell me that you are having difficulties creating your writing goals, I won’t know. So, please let me know by coming to the live chat and mentioning this under this thread below.

Also, at our next meeting, I will be rolling out our new 2017 schedule of events in the mentoring group. You won’t want to miss it!

I will have activities and challenges that will make this group vibrant and active. I just need all of us to commit to the group, and be real leaders to get our group into groove for 2017. I know we can make this happen together!

So, your assignment for this week is to reflect on your 5 writing goals for 2017 and then list them under this thread in the forum. Please post your 5 writing goals here under this thread.

Oh, one last thing before I go. I found a wonderful article online that is absolutely awesome and inspiring. It discusses writing in small short segments. Here is the URL for your reading pleasure and inspiration:
https://www.thatwhitepaperguy.com/white-paper-writing/why-you-should-write-in-short-bursts-of-time/

Give his method a try, and let me know how you do in a few weeks.

I will be mentioning this method of writing in the New Year a lot! So, stay tuned. It is something that I used this past year because I couldn’t sit at my keyboard for hours at a time. This short burst method has allowed me to finish up a manuscript and outline another and write part of another. Now that is a lot of words ladies!

So, let us all welcome 2017 with a real bash, and a commitment to being the best writer that we can be. I will do everything that I can to get you there.

Merry Christmas, and see you on December 29th, 2016 at 7 pm EST. Please let me know if you can attend.

All the Best for 2017!
Irene Roth
