Many of us operate with a lot of damaging mindsets and habits. These habits can definitely keep us from being our best. These habits can also keep us stuck in the mire of mediocrity because it's hard to be inspired to show up to our writing sessions when we feel drained and out of control.

Here are six unhelpful habits that we can change to be successful.

1. Instead of comparing ourselves to other writers around us, we should think of what makes us special as writers. We need to learn to focus on ourselves instead of others. We are each on our own journeys. Therefore, we must honor that journey to be our best and to do our best writing. This will increase our happiness and self-esteem. In the process, we will live a more purposeful and authentic life.

2. Don’t shoulder responsibility for everything yourself. Instead, delegate to others even if it seems like more work at first to explain what you want done at first. Whether you’re handling a big home project or planning a family reunion, it's important for you to ask for help. It is especially important for writers to delegate other responsibilities so that they can get some much-needed writing done.

3. Don’t always try to keep track of who disappoints you. There are so many disappointments in life. And we should make sure that we pick our battles for peace of mind and for the ability to be inspired by our writing and to get some writing done regularly. This can take a lot of time and energy. In order to write at our best, we need to ensure that we aren’t always stressed out.

4. Try not to constantly check your phone. Instead, take intentional breaks, especially when you’re writing. Leave your phone in another room when you’re writing and be sure to focus on your writing alone when you write. You can only write at your best if you stay in the present as you write.

5. Try not to shop your way into happiness. So many of us use retail therapy a lot. For instance, if we’re feeling stressed or if we didn’t have a good night’s sleep, buying seems to be the next best thing to do. However, this will only clutter our lives and the time we could have to write. It can also take us out of the present moment. Therefore, it's important to revel in nonmaterial joys and experiences.

6. Stop overthinking. Writers are notorious overthinkers. We make things so much more difficult than they should be by anticipating that things will go wrong when we don’t really know until we get to the moment. Therefore, try to focus on what you control, and let the other stuff take care of yourself.

By rethinking how we do things, we can ensure that we can write more productively and be happier and more content.

Writers can be a sensitive group of people. It is therefore important for us to protect ourselves from the hard we inflict on ourselves by living in a mindless and unconscious manner. We can be our best with a bit of tweaking of our habits.
