One of the most important things that writers can become excellent writers is to write every day. But this can be hard for writers to do at first. But with practice, writing every day can not only become a habit for writers but it will be something that we look forward to as our writing time approaches.

There are many ways to ensure that you write consistently. Here are a few to consider.

Set up mini-writing goals. These are small, measurable goals that you know you can achieve, such as writing 50 or 100 words a day, every day. Most writers can do this in their sleep. So, it is a no-brainer. The idea is that once you get into the habit of writing even 50 words a day, you will be able to do a lot more in time. But even 50 or 100 consistent words a day can amount to a lot of writing in a year.

2. If you absolutely can’t write every day, try writing five days out of the week. If you work full time this may be a great option for you. You may want to write Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many working writers are very tired after a long’s day work. Therefore, it can be hard to sit down and write effectively. Thus, I always recommend that they spend more time writing on the weekends to catch up on their writing goals. That way, they could write when they are well-rested. The problem with this is that you will probably have to plan to write on the weekend and let your family know that you intend to write for a few hours in the morning or evening on both Saturday and Sunday. That way, they won’t be as likely to make a spur of the moment decision to go for a drive in the country or out for brunch when you are supposed to be writing.

If your spouse genuinely remembers that you planned to write for a few hours a day on the weekend, (s)he is more likely to schedule some outings outside of your writing time. Then neither of you will be frustrated. You may want to also talk about your weekend plans with your spouse on Thursday or Friday before the weekend and see if you can schedule in some writing and still do some things with your family. This type of negotiation will ensure that you will get some writing done on the weekend and still enjoy the weekend with your family. So, this way its a win-win for everyone, and your spouse won’t resent your writing time.

So, if you are not writing consistently, try the mini-habit approach to writing. Through this approach, you set small mini habits that you will achieve and worse comes to worse you can encourage yourself to do some writing because these goals are so small. Further, through the mini habits approach you will be writing more, and you will be building on your self-confidence as a writer.

Becoming excellent is a never-ending process that we can all work towards achieving. Try the small-mini-writing goal approach starting right away. You will be so glad that you did, and you will be building self-confidence as a result—which is a win-win for writers.

I will set up a mini challenge this month around this habit of excellence. So, stay tuned for that!

Try it!
