This webinar will focus on the role of contracts in publishing law: contracts with agents, contracts with traditional publishers, and contracts with indie publishing platforms like Amazon KDP. It will boil down the key points you will find in these contracts to their essentials and emphasize clauses authors should pay particular attention to. We'll also spend some time on how to research agents and publishers to find the right fit for your work and separate out business and reputational questions from red flags in contracts.

The presenter, Jacqui Lipton, is a senior agent at The Tobias Literary Agency and a publishing attorney. She presents widely on legal issues for creatives and is the author of Law and Authors: A Legal Handbook for Writers.
Class Format
This will be a live webinar, but there will be a recording available for a specific amount of time that will be clearly stated in the classroom forum.

Excellent presentation about understanding and what to know about agent versus publishing contracts. I learned much about what to watch out.
I really appreciate how Attorney Lipton presented some daunting legal aspects of the writing profession in an easy-to-understand way. Contracts include industry standards, many she pointed out, but also should reflect the writers wants and needs. She told us what to look for. So important.
Excellent class! Lots of great info about pieces of contracts and red flags. Jacqueline Lipton is extremely knowledgeable about the topic and generously shared what she knows.
