GLUEDRAKE2019
Have you ever started a book by a ‘new to you’ author and settled right into the story? You just know you’re going to love it. You’re relaxed and trusting the author from the first page. You're hooked and you know you will be there for awhile.

How do they do that?

You have less than five pages to hook a reader. Probably less, if your reader is an agent. A compelling beginning can adhere readers to your writing and your voice as well as your story.

Sound impossible? It’s not.

Join Laura and bring your first five pages for
  • interactive tips on what is great and could be improved in YOUR pages
  • feedback from other class participants: Can you hook them?
  • Examples of what is "hooky" and what are near misses
  • and much more!
There will be lessons, but this will be an interactive course as well. You’ll post your first five pages, and besides getting my feedback, the class will be encouraged to give feedback as well. We’ll work on those first pages until they shine!

The goal is to end the class with a solid beginning to your story, including plenty of reader-glue but we promise no frozen light poles! ;-)
Syllabus
Syllabus: We'll go over a few lessons but most of this class is focused on reviewing and refining your first 5 pages!

NOTE: You do need a version of your first 5 pages to get the most out of this class!:)

Please note that this workshop includes three critiques including first line, first page, and first five pages. The goal is walking away with 5 ready-for-publication pages.

This has been the most helpful Savvy class I've taken, and I've taken LOTS of them. Even as the class started I was still struggling as to which opening to use but Laura guided me by asking questions a reader might have so that I could make things clearer without an info dump. I'm really excited about taking what I've learned as I re-write chapter two and beyond. Thank you Laura!
I was quite disappointed in this class.
I didn't feel we were given what was promised which was feedback regarding our pages from a group. I did not expect the instructor to take it upon herself to edit my work, her comments felt nitpicky and she completely ignored the last two pages.
There was barely any feedback from other participants. There were maybe three people in the class? Maybe it should have been canceled, due to low registration, since I assumed that was part of the deal, hearing other people's opinions.
I didn't feel that this course was worth the time or money.
