Like it or not, over a decade ago, Fifty Shades of Grey changed the publishing game, and brought romance novels a new level of recognition and cache in the age of e-books. By now, most people know it started as Twilight fanfiction. However, did you know that the trend of authors going pro from the world of fanfic has continued to this day? Anna Todd’s After series hit big first as Wattpad fiction about One Direction and became a five-movie series. Most recently, The Love Hypothesis and Ali Hazelwood have become ascendant in contemporary romance, and that all grew from Reylo stories in the new Star Wars trilogy fandom. Fanfic with the serial numbers filed and reworked as the basis for a fully original work is now big business.
In this workshop, we will look briefly at the history of fanfic, look at some of the last decade’s hits that went mainstream, discuss how to ethically rework plotlines and original characters and worldbuilding into new, original stories, and break down how understanding fanfics use of common tropes can help you, in general, become a better, more aware writer. Finally, we’ll focus on how to avoid the pitfalls of poorly reworked fanfic, including limited descriptions, incomplete world building, and flat characters with lacking motivation.
