You’ve plotted your novel, mapped your main character’s “arc” of change, and set your story in motion. Now for the hardest part of all: Figuring out what all these people should say to one another—and to themselves.
The writer and poet Elizabeth Bowen once said, “Dialogue is what characters do to each another.” In this week-long class, multi-genre author, speechwriter, playwright, and former award-winning journalist Amy L. Bernstein will share telling passages of dialogue from a range of literary sources to help you analyze how words spoken and withheld serve to define and distinguish characters and move your story along.
You will study the role of action beats and the mental, physical, and verbal components that establish context and generate the conflict your story needs. And you’ll have ample opportunities to write and receive feedback on dialogue-heavy scenes in response to specific prompts. You’ll learn why and how “Voice is not a choice. It’s a result,” as author Robert McKee says.
