Syllabus
There’s a tried and true writing secret under every writer’s nose that spans both character and plot development: Characters come to life and stories keep readers glued to the page when there’s a continual and passionate push/pull between what the villain wants and what the protagonist wants. One wins, the other loses then wins, then loses again. Consequences escalate until one finally goes over the edge and a winner is declared. While it’s important to realize that not all antagonists are villains, this course concentrates on giving your protagonist a villain who will give them the fight of their life.

Week One: Week Two: Week Three:
Start With a Villain With a Destructive Goal (thruline) Give the Villain a Lack of Humanity (motivation)
Make the Protagonist a Strong Opponent (conflict)
Give Protagonist a Strategy to Thwart the Villain (conflict)
Protagonist and Villain Exploit Each Other’s Weaknesses. (the push/pull) The Push/Pull Shapes the Story; The Strongest Opponent Wins
