Fortnight Flash Fiction is an ongoing contest run by SavvyAuthors every two weeks. With built-in accountability, write and finish a story and have it evaluated by your peers. Join us for this hands-on learning opportunity.
You will write, learn, and even score winner's trophies and participation medals!
Flash fiction is typically short fiction anywhere from a handful to 1,000 words-ish. It's a soft defintion that depends on the publisher or writer. We have defined it as 1,000 words or less. Definitely no more than 1,000 words. If you write more, cut them. The challenge is can you hone your writing skills so much that you can create a full story with a clear plot and conflict set in a compelling milieu with sympathetic characters in 4 pages (250 words each) or less.
Like the French mathematician Blaise Pascal said in 1657:
Writing well-crafted short fiction is HARD. But we know you can do it. And we know how these short works help hone your writing for longer works. Using concise and evocative words and expertly crafting the structure you can tell a great story in just a few words. No, really you can!
Don't miss this great chance to have fun while you hone your skills!
We run the contest every two weeks!
You register for the contest based on the your preferred start date.
On the Monday when the contest starts, you log in and read the prompt. For the rest of the week, you write your flash story. If you have questions, you can ask your fellow contestants in the dedicated contest forums and ask us as well.
On Sunday before Midnight, you post your story ANONYMOUSLY in the class forum. For the next week, we allow the registered members of SavvyAuthors to vote on the story they like best. Your story is NOT open to viewing by the general public but is open to viewing by all registered SavvyAuthors members. Nobody but the Savvy Crew will know who wrote which story.
Voting closes Friday at midnight and we announce the winning story and the winner's name on Saturday.
There is a lot of good information out there to help you craft your Flash story. The list below is not at all comprehensive so definitely look for more good information of your own!
And our own Peter Andrews regularly teaches Flash Fiction classes here at SavvyAuthors so definitely follow him for his next class!
