Falling in love isn’t easy. It’s why we can write full length novels about characters in the process of doing so, with all the ups and down that entails.

When someone is attempting to kill one of the characters or has been hired to keep one from being killed or kidnapped or needs to prove they didn’t do whatever crime they are accused of committing, well, things get even trickier.

Mixing the two together is a balancing act. Too much romance and it kills the suspense of the companion story. Too much suspense and it kills the vibe of the romance.

The trick with Romantic Suspense is that it can go three different ways:

· The romance is the main story, and the mystery/suspense element is a secondary storyline
· The mystery/suspense element is the main story, and the romance is a secondary storyline
· The romance and the mystery/suspense elements are equal partners in the story and thus each gets to have half of the story

The trick is to know how you want to mix things up.

In 4-weeks, that’s what we’ll concentrate on: writing the romantic suspense story. Some of the things we’ll look at is what brings the main characters together for the romance, what brings them together for the mystery or suspense, where the story begins, what will be required of the characters, who the villain is though the villain may be more than a single character. There will need to be sleuthing done. There will need to be romantic scenes playing out. An increase in danger is part of this recipe as is a satisfying solution to the story and the happily ever after for the romance that is separate from taking the villain down in some manner.

It could even include comedy—or not!

We’ll even talk series where the romance might need to build more slowly as it stretches across more than a single title while the mystery element is a different one in each volume of the series. Or it could be the other way around and feature a different couple in each volume though one may work for a company that supplies the series with a name.

So many ways to go. So much fun to have!

Join me in your muse’s laboratory to mix up some trouble with kisses and maybe more along the way!
