Side characters are an important component in your story. You want them to be interesting, but not take over the story, right? In this workshop, you’ll learn some tips and tricks to creating useful secondary characters.
  • Lesson One: Basics about secondary characters
  • Lesson Two: The Sidekick – how to figure out what type you want and how to craft it
  • Lesson Three: The Wrench (aka the one who innocently messes everything up) - how to make sure they’re not an antagonist
  • Lesson Four: The Antagonist (aka the one with evil intent) – how to shape it so the character is satisfying and important
  • Lesson Five: Pitfalls in writing secondary characters
Class Format
Savvy Authors' workshops are held on a forum: a bulletin board based system. You will receive a reminder notice one day prior to the start of the workshop that includes instructions on how to access the workshop forum. If you have not received instructions by the day the workshop begins, please check your spam filter.

The forum will be available the morning (EST) of the day the workshop starts and will remain accessible to all participants thereafter. You will also be given simple instructions on how to create a PDF of all your discussions along with our privacy and data retention policy.

Good basic information. I was excited to learn more about creating and strengthening my secondary characters, and hoped for more interaction with the instructor (due to weather, there were tech issues), examples, prompts or even brief "homework" assignments. This was my first SavvyAuthors class, so maybe I didn't know what to expect.
