It's a real conundrum. We want our characters to be "sympathetic"-- someone the reader cares about and roots for. But paradoxically, sometimes the more we TRY to make them good and admirable, the more saintly they become, the less the reader likes them. It might be envy, or resentment, or an instinctive resistance to being manipulated. But there's no denying it. There's more to making readers care than just making "sympathetic" characters.

But we can do it! We can use our self-psychology to understand readers, and our craft to create characters who might not be good, might not be admirable, but sure are compelling.

In this interactive workshop, we'll discuss:
  • What turns the audience off?
  • What tactics of sympathy-generation don't work?
  • Enough of what doesn't work! What does?
  • What power does point-of-view give us?
  • How can physical action and description make the reader feel along with the character?
  • How can you make these work in your story?
Class Format
Savvy Authors' workshops are held on a forum: a bulletin board based system. You will receive a reminder notice one day prior to the start of the workshop that includes instructions on how to access the workshop forum. If you have not received instructions by the day the workshop begins, please check your spam filter.

The forum will be available the morning (EST) of the day the workshop starts and will remain accessible to all participants thereafter. You will also be given simple instructions on how to create a PDF of all your discussions along with our privacy and data retention policy.

Really appreciated this approach to using our characters' vulnerabilities and flaws to make them more relatable (and interesting).
I've taken other classes from Alicia and found them enlightening. This one seemed a bit on the light side. The essence of what we were to learn seemed to be addressed in class #7. I would have liked more exercise an opportunity for feedback.
