Happily ever after. These three words can bring up some pretty strong opinions, especially in the romance world. While many romance readers expect some kind of HEA for the main characters, you don't have to stick with a traditional happy ending to satisfy your story. In this workshop, we'll look at the different types of endings for a romance and discuss what makes an ending 'happy'. Then, we'll look at our own characters (or characters from a book) and track their progress to help determine which ending is best for their journey.

Lesson One: Why HEA?
Writers will learn about why readers expect a HEA and what instances can warrant a non-HEA instead.

Lesson Two: What Makes a HEA?
Writers will learn about the different types of happy endings, and how no two romances need the same ending to satisfy or fulfil their stories.

Lesson Three: Your HEA
Writers with a WIP or draft will look at their characters and their romantic journey to discover which kind of ending best fits their needs.
Writers without a WIP or draft will reverse-engineer their favorite romance book(s) to see if the ending the characters go was the one they earned.
Class Format
Savvy Authors' workshops are held on a forum: a bulletin board based system. You will receive a reminder notice one day prior to the start of the workshop that includes instructions on how to access the workshop forum. If you have not received instructions by the day the workshop begins, please check your spam filter.

The forum will be available the morning (EST) of the day the workshop starts and will remain accessible to all participants thereafter. You will also be given simple instructions on how to create a PDF of all your discussions along with our privacy and data retention policy.
