Laura Costello, Assistant Editor for Sourcebooks Casablanca

Romance in all subgenres

Laura is looking for: I’m open to all romance subgenres: romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, historical, western, and erotic. Action-packed, banter-filled suspense is always fun, although I have a penchant for tense, isolated survival situations. In paranormal, I want a unique world where anything can happen—take me someplace I’ve never been! In contemporary romance, I lean toward books that are smart, fun, and lighthearted.

About Laura:

Laura Costello began her publishing career at Sourcebooks in 2015 after interning at Globe Pequot Press’s Falcon imprint and Warscapes, an independent online magazine. She is currently an Assistant Editor for Sourcebooks Casablanca, looking for romance in all subgenres. Sourcebooks publishes 6-8 romance titles per month, in print and ebook formats simultaneously. We are the country’s largest woman-owned independent publishing house. We’re known for our sales and marketing, as well as our focus on building authors’ careers.

Tera Cuskaden, Editor for Entangled Publishing

Romance * see specifics below

Tera is looking for:

For Scorched
  • High concept plots I can sell in one sentence.
    • Taboos. Think stepdads, preachers, step-siblings, a parent’s best friend, an old teacher from high school (though the younger character cannot still be in high school), etc. Use your imagination!
  • I’m looking for romance with great romantic tension between alpha males and strong, relatable heroines. I’d also love to see alpha subs!
    • I’m particularly interested in menage/multiples, relatable heroines, alpha men, LGBTQ, diversity, and royalty. I want super hot stories that while at an erotic heat level with the sexual interaction occurring within the first chapter or two also heavily focus on the romance. All stories must contain an HEA or HFN. I’m open to 1st and 3rd person, and I prefer dual POVs, though I’m not closed to single POVs. I’m also looking at all subgenres for Scorched, not just contemporary romance, though I love contemporary! I’m a fan of Megan Hart, Maya Banks, Lorelei James, Tiffany Reisz, Sylvia Day, Madison Faye, Jenika Snow, Penny Wylder, and Alexa Riley.
    • Menage paranormal and sci-fi romance. Think breeders, fated mates and/or a woman bonded to multiple men.
  • Tropes I love: Best friend’s sibling, class warfare, enemies to lovers, fake engagement/relationship, fish out of water, fling, forbidden love, friends to lovers, opposites attract, redemption, protector, return to hometown, revenge, sibling’s ex-spouse, stranded, royalty.
For All Other Entangled Imprints
  • High concept plots that will sell in one sentence.
  • I’d love to see romances with single dads.
  • Romantic suspense/thrillers. I’d love to see stories with a more psychological basis.
  • Sexy contemporaries featuring everyday, relatable heroines (think teacher, nurse, veterinarian, etc.), and above-average heroes (though they don’t have to be billionaires, unless you’re targeting Indulgence).
  • Manuscripts targeted toward the Indulgence imprint (Here’s where those billionaires come into play!)
  • Men in uniform or veterans.
  • Sports stories.
  • Women on vacation and/or stories taking place in exotic locales.
  • I’m looking for paranormal romance with great romantic tension between alpha males and strong, relatable heroines. I’m open to all genres and themes, though I am specifically looking for shifters (big cats and bears in particular), vampires, and science fiction/fantasy with crossover elements, such as shifters and/or vampires.
  • Contemporary-based sci-fi. Think DNA-enhanced soldiers, super soldiers, medical issues, military, artificial intelligence, hackers and international espionage, and Outbreak.
  • I would love to see sci-fi stories in the style of 12 MonkeysFirefly, and Star Wars.
  • Tropes I love: Best friend’s sibling, class warfare, enemies to lovers, fake engagement/relationship, fish out of water, fling, forbidden love, friends to lovers, military, opposites attract, redemption, protector, return to hometown, revenge, sibling’s ex-spouse, stranded, royalty.

Carrie Lofty, Freelance Acquiring Editor at Carina Press

Across the Romance Subgenres

Carrie looking for:  I’m acquiring romance in all romance genres, especially contemporary, erotic and LGBTQ, which can range from realistic to ménage+. For paranormal, sci-fi and fantasy romances, hook me with traditional tropes. I adore great dialogue, and I need to be invested in what the characters want and why they can’t (initially) be happy together. Some special interests: adrenaline junkies, dark homecomings, anti-heroes, gentle bruisers, and taboo sexual themes!

About Carrie: Carrie Lofty is a freelance acquiring editor with Carina Press. As Manuscript Chair of Chicago North RWA, she led critiques for Courtney Milan, Julie Ann Walker, Meredith Duran, and Julie James, among others. Following a ten-year career as an award-winning romance author, she began freelance editing in earnest. Her most notable success is Far From Home by Lorelie Brown, the first lesbian romance nominated for a RITA™. You can check out her website at and follow her on Twitter @CarrieLofty.

Heidi Shoham, Editorial Director at Entangled Publishing

Romance (from small-town and sweet to hot, erotic)

Heidi is looking for:

  • Alpha heroes intent on sweeping everyday heroines off their feet.
  • Sweet small-town romances with a rich Hallmark’esque quality.
  • Sassy and sexy romances that’ll make me laugh out loud and swoon all at once.
  • Hot, erotic romances that push the boundaries.
  • Cowboys, cowboys, cowboys.
  • Men in uniform/veterans/first responders.
  • Angsty, broken heroes – bonus points for a snarky sense of humor covering up all that hurt.
  • Category romances with characters aged 35 to 45. These need to be layered, emotional stories with likable heroines, hot heroes, authentic dialogue, and strong and believable conflict.
  • High concept stories I can sell in one line!

About Heidi: Heidi Shoham started working as an editor in the summer of 2007. Her BA in English Language and Literature certainly helps, but it’s been working with wonderfully talented NYT and USA Today bestselling authors and other editors that has taught her the most. Besides editing for Entangled Publishing, Heidi also edits for many bestselling indie authors. When she’s not working on edits, she’s running after her three lovely wildlings. She spends way too much time online—for research purposes, of course—and can be found on Twitter as @heidishoham and on Facebook as Heidi Shoham, where she rambles, and rants, and genuinely tries to make sense (although it might not always show).

Tule Publishing

Romance * See Below

Tule Publishing is looking for: At Tule Publishing, we value our commitment to the author. We are a publishing company founded by an author, for authors. We are interested in working with authors who know their brand and vision, and are passionate about what they write. If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you. We accept both agented and unagented submissions that have not been previously published.

It is necessary that submissions to our romance imprints have a central romance plot with a happily-ever-after, or at least, a happy-for-now ending. We ask that for all imprints your stories fall within the categorized lengths below:

    • Short Novel: 50k – 60k words
    • Long Novel: 60k – 100k words

We are interested in stories with series potential.

As we are a digital first publisher, we would like to work with authors who have a strong online presence and who are committed to promoting and marketing their work. We do work with debut authors, but expect those authors to actively build their brand.

Currently, we are particularly interested in stories that fit our Montana Born, Texas Born, and American Heart imprints.

About Tule Publishing: Tule’s one goal is to publish fantastic stories by the best writers. We want to delight our readers and satisfy our authors’ desire for creativity, freedom, and commercial success. Many of our authors are from the traditional NY world of publishing, with an existing reader fan base.
